Remember that feeling of being utterly captivated by a TV show, lost in another world? Netflix seems to be tapping into that nostalgia by bringing back some beloved TV series from the past.
Most of us watched these shows for the first time on DVDs. Ah, the days of DVD collecting! Remember those trips to the video store, going through the shelves of DVDs, looking for the latest season of your favorite show…? Eagerly anticipating the release of a new box set….?
There was something special about owning a physical copy – the anticipation of opening the case, the fun of swapping DVDs with friends. It was a different era, a time before streaming took over……and now Netflix has brought them back.
So grab your popcorn, get cozy and get ready to relive some of your favorite TV moments on Netflix.
LOST (2004-2010)
I remember watching LOST on DVD. It was nothing like what I had watched at the time. LOST was ICONIC. The series follows the survivors of a plane crash who find themselves stranded on a mysterious island. Drama, plot twists, supernatural elements, unforgettable characters, you name it… this TV series has them all. LOST captivated audiences worldwide. Now, you can relive the mystery of the island all over again on Netflix. There’s a small catch though… This isn’t available for viewing in Sri Lanka. You have to access Netflix USA (using a VPN) to get access to this. It’s worth it though!
Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
I didn’t watch this when it came out. I was too young at the time I guess. But I watched it later on and absolutely loved it.
The story revolves around a high school chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with cancer. To secure his family’s future, he starts making a dangerous drug with his former student. Things quickly escalate, and he becomes this ruthless drug lord. Watching it felt like a descent into darkness… You should check it out if you are interested in this type of storyline. This is a critically acclaimed TV series btw.
Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)
I have a vague memory of watching Gilmore Girls on a TV channel in Sri Lanka. But I definitely watched it on DVD. It was a classic. Watching these characters, the story, and the visuals was an instant mood booster. The story follows the lives of mother and daughter, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, in the charming town of Stars Hollow. The witty dialogue can be enjoyed for days on end. You’ll binge-watch it for sure.
Fun fact – The Friends TV series and Gilmore Girls were shot in the same lot and the two casts would hang out together at Luke’s diner. Monica and Rory shared outfits during the shows and Rachel and Lorelai did the same.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008)
They showed Avatar on ETV. I think it was ETV I remember watching it on TV but never in the proper order. But later on, when we were introduced to the magical portal called the Internet I watched the full series. And now it’s even better you can binge-watch on Netflix. That’s not all; the live-action adaptation came out this year, so you can watch that as well. Seasons 2 and 3 are on the way too.
The story, the visuals, the characters and the dialogue are very entertaining and interesting. It follows the story of Aang, a young boy who’s the last of the Air Nomads and the Avatar, a powerful being who can control all four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. Aang was frozen in ice for 100 years, and now he must learn to master his powers to stop the Fire Nation from conquering the world. Along the way, he teams up with Katara and Sokka, siblings from the Southern Water Tribe, and together they embark on a journey of self-discovery and adventure.
So there you have it! A few of the classic TV shows you can rediscover on Netflix.
Happy binge-watching!
